Narrative
TAUNTON, MA – A driver suspected of impairment struck two motorcyclists on southbound Route 24, which killed one motorcyclist and critically injured the other one Saturday. This fatal wreck happened around 2:30 a.m. when the Lexus driver – 35-year-old Fred Moreira of New Bedford – hit the 2007 Yamaha R1 and 2001 Yamaha V-Star 1100 motorcycles. The operator of the V-Star was only identified as a 39-year-old man from Fall River. Troopers said he was sent to Rhode Island Hospital for severe, life-threatening injuries. The other motorcyclist, also from Fall River – 30-year-old Tyler Moniz – was thrown from his bike and landed between some trees, suffering fatal injuries in the process. Moreira was charged with vehicular homicide, operating under the influence of liquor, and negligent operation of a motor vehicle.
